CONTEXT: Murals of BGC

Looking for some of the hidden untouched gems of modern contemporary art? Well you’re in the right track! Come with me and be mesmerized by the street art movement and eye-catching murals along the streets of Bonifacio Global City.

Aside from BGC’s towering buildings, shopping centers, and many food places you can always try around the area, it is also renowned for the many art pieces scattered around the neighborhood. It is being changed every now and then to give people fresh and unique visual experiences each time they pass through the streets.  Street art or public art is a big part of urban culture.  Unlike art that you find in museums, this kind of media staged in the streets, walkaways and building make art more accessible to the public.

Scattered across the city are some massive wall murals creatively done by both locals and foreign artists and they’re definitely making the city much more beautiful by instilling in their works an artistic modern touch. These BGC art murals also come in various sizes, from gigantic wall art to life size to smaller than a human scale. This setting is a great way of getting art to the masses, out in the public space where they can be much more appreciated and enjoyed by the people.

This is an example of a mural entitled, ”For the People: Gates of Paradise” created by Palimpsest and located at BGC Bus Depot where the BGC buses go to sleep at night. The mural features a mechanized caterpillar carrying a city on top of it, representing how technology – with its nonstop innovation and development – helps the society move forward and be more prosperous in the future.

“ICONS OF PASSION”

The murals you can spot around the BGC are products of yearly Art BGC festivals organized and hosted by the Bonifacio Arts Foundation (BAFI) in Bonifacio Global City district which they started in 2015. As my tita who lives in Taguig said, she may not go around the BGC that much, but every time she goes there, she spots something new. If it’s your first time in Manila and you have a couple of hours to spare or are eyeing for something free and Instagram-worthy, the area is worth the visit.

Undeniably, these pieces of modern art have become top of the long lists of places to visit in Manila as they really inspire the creativity in you. It is a great place to showcase the hidden talent of many artists and through this, art is much more appreciated out in the open. As the BGC Arts foundation intentionally emphasize how artists are genuine icons of passion, they place great value not just on the work but in the individual who make it possible. And with this, many people would surely be motivated to explore the world of art and instill it in their lives in such fun and creative ways.
